They reduce noise and vibration; decrease sprocket, pulley, belt, and chain wear; and increase the life of drive components.
Generally a good quality tensioner lasts somewhere between 50,000 – 70,000 kms. So make sure you replace your tensioner after substantial use because its cog or the chain tensioning part gets roughed up and wears out with use.
