The backup light switch is the electronic switch on a vehicle that is responsible for activating the vehicle's reverse lights. The switches work by activating the lights when the transmission is put into reverse gear.
The backup light switch is located on the transmission case. It completes the circuit to the backup lights only when the transmission is shifted into reverse.
Any time that the rear back up lights blink in reverse would be caused by a short in the flasher circuit or a blinker circuit. The power wires to the rear back up lights are next to the flasher lights circuit and make cause the lights to flash if the wires are shorted together.
