The springs are the foundation of a suspension system. They are what allow the up and down movement of the wheels with minimal impact on the chassis and the rest of the vehicle. The primary job of springs, though, is to hold up the weight the vehicle and its cargo.
Most tension springs are wound with an initial tension, this tension is the force which holds the spring coils wound together. The measure of initial tension is the load necessary to overcome the internal force to start coil separation.
During the winter months, ice, snow, cold temperatures and salt to the roads can cause accelerated corrosion of a coil spring. Wheel imbalances due to misalignment or damaged tyres can cause uneven wear to your car's suspension, which can lead to the damage and breakage of coil springs.
