Rwanda bird’s eye berbere (chile de arbere) is one of the main members of the capsicum family plants that thrive naturally in Asia and the horn of Africa (especially Ethiopia).
It is as capsaicin-rich as its red hot chili counterpart when it has ripened.
Its scoville heat units (SHU) reach 100,000 to 225,000.
In appearance, the chili is small and thus the name ‘bird’s eye.’
Eating food pickled with bird’s eye berbere offers the same qualities as its family members including chili peppers, ginger, fenugreek and garlic.
This includes high vitamin C content for protection against diseases.
