The flowers are analgesic, anaphrodisiac, anti inflammatory, antipyretic, antiseptic, astringent, brain tonic, demulcent, diuretic, nutrient, refrigerant and sedative. Nilophar dry flower have a generally calming and sedative effect upon the nervous system, reputedly reducing the sex drive and making them useful in the treatment of insomnia, anxiety and similar disorders.
Useful in diarrhoea, bowel complaints, scrofula, inflamed tissues in various parts of the body and as a demulcent for bronchial troubles like asthma, bronchitis, cough and tuberculosis. Also used for oedema, piles, kidney troubles, catarrh of the bladder and irritations of the prostate. Also valued as a cardiac tonic in palpitation of heart. Nilophar dry flower contains an enzyme called galactosyltransferase that helps break down carbohydrates into sugar molecules that are more easily absorbed by the body's cells.
