A casserole (French: diminutive of casse, from Provençal cassa 'pan') is a type of big, deep-pan or bowl used in the oven to prepare a variety of meals; it is also a type of cuisine cooked in such a vessel. The casserole is a glass or earthenware dish with a cover in which food is cooked and occasionally served. Casseroles are several baked foods that are served in a baking dish. Although technically, stews are cooked on the stovetop and casseroles are baked, the phrases casserole and stew are sometimes used interchangeably.
